Seriously, when was the last time I actually put up a recipe on the blog? I talk about food so much on social media its a shame I haven’t posted this sooner. Grab a pen, a piece of paper, and a fork folks! Today, it’s all about some yummy yams that you most certainly will want by your side this Thanksgiving!
I am a big fan of yams. Backed with a ton of B vitamins, Vitamin A, C, beta-carotene, and a ton of potassium, this tuber is totally rad and extremely healthy! My only gripe with my friend the yam is how it gets “bullied” so to speak by a lot of restaurant chains. You know what I am talking about. Just go to a steak house and you will more than likely find someone ordering a yam topped with brown sugar, sweet cream cinnamon butter, and marshmallows (I still do this day don’t understand the marshmallow thing. .but HEY! Who am I to judge). Yams are a sweet kind of tuber, but adding all that unnecessary extra sweet stuff just made your yummy yam into a desert, not a side. However, I realize that some of you like the sweet side of the yam dish, so. . .how do we combat this?
Enter ye the best mashed yams you ever had, and that’s real talk, ya heard? 😉
Cinnamon Maple Bacon Mashed Yams
Ingredients
2-3 Large Yams
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1-2tsp nutmeg
1-2 tbs grassfed butter
2 tbs grade B maple syrup
4 strips bacon
Directions: bake yams at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes. Let them cool just a little bit after baking (about 5-10 minutes max) and then remove the skin, placing the yams in a mixing bowl. Add butter, cinnamon, and maple syrup to the bowl with the yams and start your mashing. Once mashed together be sure to cut 4 strips of bacon and sautee them in a frying pan until the bits crisp. Once done, add bacon bits to the mash and stir until they are evenly distributed in the dish. Simple. Sweet. Savory. Delicious!
Eat up folks! Let me know how this dish goes with your holiday feast for thanks giving!
Have a great weekend everyone! Until next time. . .
