It’s been nearly 4 years since I have been blogging my way through the internet talking about all things related to healthy eating, strength training, and living life to the fullest in Pittsburgh, the city I love so much.
What started as a quirky blog called “The Primal Burgher” quickly evolved into something much more refined, powerful, and for lack of a better term, bad ass 😉
I’m older now (though Id don’t like admitting that fact), more mature, and in a different stage in my own fitness career than where I was when I first started. My shift into this world of strength training did not come easy, but I am happy to say that that fight was well worth it.
My hope is to show you how to achieve similar feats of strength yourself, not just in training, but in life.
For those of you who don’t know me, here’s a brief little run down of who I am, where I come from, and what I intend to do to make you stronger than you ever thought possible.
My name is Janelle Pica.
I am a dual certified Kettlebell instructor with Strong First and Dragon Door . I also have a mobility certification through Ground Force Method . I own a fitness company in Pittsburgh, PA, USA called Primal Fitness Pittsburgh LLC and we focus on fundamental movement patterns and the skill of brute strength at the studio through the use of kettlebells, sandbags, and calisthenics training.
I have competed in major fitness events such as the Iron Maiden Challenge and have traveled the earth studying under some of the top level strength training professionals in the industry. I have also been featured on major websites such as Robbwolf.com, Balancedbites.com, and Eattoperform.com.
Recently, I was deemed one of the strongest females in my strength training and powerlifting community as, to date, I am the only documented female capable of doing a strict military press with two 28kg kettlebells with ease and precision.
I realize a lot of this might come off as kind of. . .intense and intimidating. Trust me, I am a goofball at heart, and my hope is that you get to see some of that quirkiness as time moves on. Just a heads up, my three favorite words are “Boom!” , “Sweet!” and “Awesome!” so get used to them being placed in my upcoming posts. My mission here is not to intimidate you, but to inspire you to chase after what it is you wish to achieve, no matter what your circumstances may be.
I mentioned previously that my transition into this world of strength did NOT come easily. I would be lying to you if I said that it did.
Here’s the dark truth about me.
In 2011 my life changed for the worse. I was once a happy go lucky 20 something who quickly became ill with an autoimmune condition. (You can read at length about my illness by visiting Robb Wolf’s website). Left with no hope in getting better, I turned to a lot of partying in the South Side of Pittsburgh to numb my feelings.
I began to drink. I began to drink A LOT. Eventually, the bad habits caught up with me and I would soon find myself heading down the path to full destruction.
But something happened one day when I decided to press through the difficulties was facing. I had to start fighting for my life. I had to start believing that my life was worth living. I had to start believing that what seemed “impossible” was truly possible.
I decided to surround myself with people who could lift me up when I was incapable of doing so for myself. I decided to learn how to eat smart, train hard, and enjoy my life through the use of kettlebell training, the whole food nutrition, and by keeping myself active with fun fitness activities in the Greater City of Pittsburgh.
Over time, my autoimmune condition would reverse to remission, I would grow to be one for the strongest females pound for pound, and I eventually gained enough momentum to launch my very own fitness business thanks to the number of people who encouraged me, trained me, supported me, and carried me through some of the most difficult parts of my life. The results of all that hard work were nothing shy of miraculous. My dream has become a reality.
And I want YOUR DREAM to become YOUR REALITY.
